Flag Day Paper Quilt
Perfect for art classes, home schooling, and after school programs, this activity is a fun arts and crafts project to learn about and celebrate Flag Day. As a group, you can design a "quilt" together, incorporating everyone's ideas about Flag Day and patriotism.
The intellectual development of the teens will be impacted as they use problem solving skills to design their square in the alloted space. Their emotional development will be impacted as they consider what the flag represents to them. Their social development will be impacted as they can see as a group what the flag means to them as a whole and how they fit together or relate to each other.
The pillar of citizenship will affect this activity as the children consider what the flag means to themselves personally, and as a community. Teens will learn respect for the thoughts, feelings and ideas of others squares as it represents their emotions relating to the flag and patriotism. Teens will learn responsibility for their artwork, their workspace and the entire finished group project.
Teens will learn about character as they learn about the flag, veterans and various acts of service soldiers have performed for this country. They will learn about courage, commitment and the values that make up this country.
Supplies needed for the activity
Materials needed:
- Paper squares, all the same dimensions. You will need as many squares as children participating in the activity
- Markers
- Crayons
- Pencils
- Erasers
- Rulers
- Large Poster Board (Two may be needed depending upon how many youth are participating. This will be the backing for everyone's individual paper quilt square.)
Instructions
First, the teens will be given a little bit of history about flag day. Then, paper squares, all cut to the same size, will be passed out. Children will then be able to brainstorm and then begin working on their personal square. Youth will be able to customize their square with markers, color pencils, or whatever manner of art medium is on hand or desired.
Once the group is done, the individual paper quilt squares can be arranged and glued on to the large size poster board When all of the individually designed squares are arranged together, side by side, they will resemble a large quilt. The group will have an overall project that they created by working cooperatively.
This project can be displayed in the lobby, cafeteria, hallway, or other places of interest. When youth see their work displayed in public, it can increase their self esteem and feelings of self worth. They will be proud of something they made together!
