Punk Rock Women

When punk rock music was in its heyday, many women contributed to the scene. From music to management, women have always been alongside some of the biggest names in the punk rock music scene. In the glory days of punk music when bands like Iggy Pop and the Stooges and the Velvet Underground were paving new roads, women were rocking out and pushing the movement forward.

Today, many people toss around the phrase "punk" or "punk music" without having any true concept of what it actually is or the roots that spurred its creation. It is more likely today to have people referring to pop music, who have never heard of bands like The Dead Kennedys, Richard Hell or Johnny Thunders.

This list is a nod to the many women who contributed to the scene when the scene was new, and when punk was in the early stages of creation. These women supported these bands, and produced music alongside of them. Many had the challenging job of being managers to some of these bands, and getting them to shows when some would have rather been high on copious amounts of drugs or other distractions.

For a complete understanding of their contributions, it is necessary to do reading and research, or listen firsthand to their music.
